Sending X-Window displays through a VPN to a VMWare Linux Client

This took me a few hours to figure out ... hopefully this will save you those hours.

I work remotely and recently had to connect to a Linux server in head-office via a VPN. My VPN client machine is 32bit windows7 ... with no X-Windows software installed.

Updated: First project with GEDA & PCB

I received the boards (10) from SeeedStudio. I built up two of them and wrote a simple fader routine to drive all 32 channels and it works! I'm actually a bit surprised because this was my first foray into circuit design, though an admittedly simple project.

I'll post the schematics, pcb-layout and gerber files in the next week or so.

Creating a Presence Twitter-bot

Here's a quick and easy project to create a presence tracking Twitter-bot.
This project came up as a challenge by a member at Protospace, my local hackerspace.

Sony loses all logic

Sony is trying to suppress the dissemination of the code signing key for PS3 software. I have the original PS3, the fat one, the one that used to be able to run "Other OS". Sony took that away some months ago and failOverflow and geohot did some good work to restore that to me.

Lot's of people have this out there now. I normally would just use it for my own purposes but since the suppression attempt I want it circulated as widely as possible.

Kit Build: Velleman P8055-1

We recently went to Australia for a vacation. One place that I found was Jaycar Electronics. Wonderful shop full of kits and assorted electronic bits. Kind of like Radio Shack in Canada used to be back in the day.

What I did on my summer !vacation

Ok - I'm going to cover a little more than that as it has been months since I've been able to update the site.

Balloon Project Telemetry Software

I finished off work on the logging and telemetry software for my balloon test platform.

Basic GPS

Work has been busy so this has suffered somewhat.

I have done some work around integrating a EM406A SiRF III GPS with an Arduino compatible and displaying the results on a 2x16 LCD.

Fixing Date import errors in F-Spot

I went to DEFCON XVII. Of course I took a camera, but screwed up and didn't set the date/time. I snapped a couple of hundred pictures, imported them into F-Spot and later realized that they were dated in 2005! Doh! Here is how I reset them to the correct values.

Moving photos managed by F-Spot

Do you use F-Spot? At some point you'll want to move all those photos to a different drive or directory. When you do, you'll want F-Spot to keep track of them in their new home.
